It’s time for another English K-Beauty review! The By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Washº is a soon-to-be launched cleanser meant to gently scrub away dirt and excess sebum, as well as reduce the appearance of blackheads. Find out if this green tea crazy gal with oily combination skin has fallen in love with yet another Wishtrend product!
When I first heard about the new By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash, I immediately perked up with unabashed excitement. You see, I’m kinda sorta obsessed with anything green tea – I drink it, I make my own scrubs out of it, and I love it as an ingredient in pretty much anything skincare-related.
Thus, I was pretty much already hooked when the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash, kindly provided for reviewing purposes by the lovely people at Wishtrend, arrived at my doorstep. But, hey, I won’t let the fact that this pale green powder wash faintly smells like a delicious matcha latte influence me in the slightest… Nope, not at all!
I’ve been using the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash now for a good 10 days. Luckily my skin reacts rather quickly to any new skincare products I introduce, so I feel confident in making a judgement call on whether or not this cleanser is a hit or miss. Alright, let’s get started with the basics on this green tea goodie!
By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash – The Basics
The By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash is promoted as a gentle, low-acidic cleanser for all skin types, but particularly suitable for anyone suffering from blackheads and excess sebum. These types of enzyme powder washes are actually quite a thing in Korean beauty, with many a Korean skincare blogger devoted to Tosowoong’s Enzyme Powder Wash or the su:m 37 White Award Enzyme Powder Wash. I myself have never tried a powder wash, but have been extremely curious about them.
Some of the benefits of enzyme powder washes are:
- A low, skin-friendly ph level of 5.5
- Gentle, non-stripping exfoliation
- Long shelf-life/low contamination risk due to powder form
- “Skincaretainment” factor (a term coined by the lovely “Snailcast” ladies!) – the fun feeling of playing around with powder and water and see the mix foam up
The By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash also has the added “yay factor” of antioxidant-rich and far less skin-aggravating ingredients compared to many other popular Korean powder washes, with a noticeable absence of sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent that many people find too harsh for their skin.
Here is a full list of ingredients for the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash:
“Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder (2%), Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Sorbitol, Papain, Betaine, Cellulose Gum, Citric Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate.”
The first ingredient on the list, “sodium bicarbonate”, is plain ole “baking soda”, which can be a problem ingredient for some in higher concentrations, since it does tend to be rather stripping. However, this potential hazard is nicely balanced out by adding plenty of gentle, skin-friendly goodies such as green tea leaf powder, hyaluronic acid, a bunch of amino acids that are known to soothe and heal the skin (methionine, theanine, lysine, proline), and even a form of Vitamin C – known to brighten the skin – has been added (sodium ascorbyl phosphate). Papaya provides the enzyme portion of this cleanser in the form of papain, which can help exfoliate and brighten the skin.
The By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash is also free from alcohol, parabenes, artificial colouring and perfume, which I know is very important to a lot of you with sensitive skin. Indeed, I can detect only a faint grassy smell, which – as mentioned before – mostly reminds me of matcha powder. The colour isn’t as dark green as that matcha powder I used to decorate some of my product pics, but rather a very soft and pale green.
By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash – How to Use and Results
Alright, now on to the real question: How effective is this stuff when it comes to combatting skincare troubles without turning your face into an angry, inflamed battlefield?
First, a quick note on how to use the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash:
- After your oil cleansing step, sprinkle an adequate amount of product (I would say roughly a 3/4 teaspoon) into the palm of your hand
- Combine powder with a bit of water and foam up the mixture
- Apply foam to wet face and support the exfoliation process by gently massaging with your fingertips in a circular motion
- You can also sprinkle the powder wash on a wet konjac sponge – it will foam up once you use the sponge on your wet skin; this method is slightly more abrasive than using your fingers
- Rinse your face throughly with tepid water
- You can use the Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash daily, though if your skin is very sensitive, you may want to reduce usage to 2-3 times a week; be careful about using this when also using chemical peels – it may be too much for your skin to handle!
So, how did I fare when using this enzyme powder wash? Just to give you a bit of background on my skin woes: my skin type is oily combination skin, which shows the first signs of ageing at age 38 (sigh). Thus, I do feel that dehydration and sallowness are becoming more and more noticeable, while I also still try to combat excess sebum and enlarged pores. Awesome, right? /s
What I absolutely adore about the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash is the fact that it offers a deep cleanse while still maintaining and protecting the skin’s natural moisture barrier. When I used the By Wishtrend Enzyme Powder Wash for the first time, I was surprised by how gentle and, yes, even moisturising it felt. The exfoliation doesn’t feel harsh at all, and there is no pulling sensation on the skin like with other mechanical peels such as sugar scrubs.
I’ve used this cleanser every evening for the past days, and it never seemed stripping or drying – on the contrary, the sensation after cleansing is very comfortable. I also noticed how exceptionally clear my skin has been looking these past days – it seems brighter, smoother and more refined overall, which is awesome!
By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash – the Bottom Line
Suffice to say, I’m pretty darn impressed with the By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash, and would recommend it to you if you are looking for a gentle, daily to weekly exfoliator and/or second step cleanser for oily to oily combination skin. I think this can also work for dry skin types, since it does not feel drying at all, but you might have to be careful if you are already using AHAs or BHAs, or any form of retinol. It’s probably best to then only use the Green Tea Powder Wash 1-2 times a week, or double-check with a dermatologist if it is ok to add this to your routine.
I have pretty resilient skin, however, and have, in fact, used the By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid Skin Prep Water after the powder wash, and it has made my skin look clearer than it has been in a long, long time!
I really cannot find any fault with this product, except maybe the fact that I was puzzled by the rather large bottle, which holds a comparatively small amount of product, 70g (2.47oz). The bottle could probably be half as big, which would make it more travel-friendly. Since this product hasn’t been launched yet, I’m not sure about the price point as of now, and it will be interesting to see for how much this retails. You only need a small amount per use, so this will probably last for a while!
